What does XRD mean?
XRD is short for off-road. We built the XRD mattress to be as lightweight and tough as possible, namely so that it can meet the demands of off-roaders and overlanders who value both durable, reliable gear and every single cubic inch of trunk space. That said, while the XRD mattress is designed and constructed with off-road adventures in mind, it’s still a welcome companion on any road trip or casual car camping adventure!
How do you deal with the difference in height between the folded back seats and the trunk in some 4Runners?
Great question. While the 4Runner is a near-perfect car camping vehicle, there is one disadvantage to the 5th-gen version–the three-inch step from the backseats to the trunk. Some campers choose to ignore this gap and use our mattress as is. Others stuff the gap with pillows or blankets. If you’re handy, you can go the DIY route, and build a platform–YouTube is a helpful resource for all of your car camping carpentry needs. Your 4Runner is tough–you need a mattress that’s tough, too. That’s why we kitted out the XRD with an ultra-rugged, 300-denier nylon ripstop fabric. Reliable enough for off-road adventures, this premium material is tear-resistant, stain-resistant, and damn near puncture-proof.
If you’re road-tripping with your favorite adventure buddy, the XRD comfortably sleeps two campers. However, if you’re rolling solo, the XRD sports a zipper down the center of the mattress to make a solo setup.
The XRD sports a large, easy-to-operate zipper down the center of the mattress. This innovative design allows solo road trippers to leave half of the mattress at home, reducing packed volume and weight while freeing up room in the trunk for gear.
To improve mattress performance and durability when the mercury drops, we treated our nylon ripstop fabric with a cold agent. This additive helps keep the fabric softer and more pliable in cold weather down to -16 degrees, reducing chances of micro-fractures that result in leaks.
